2D Mario Games
The 2D style of Mario games is the first style of Mario games to be released. The 2D style of games are what most people think of when they think of a Mario game. This style is the most consistent gameplay wise with most of the games playing very similar. There have been 11 2D Mario games released in the 40 years of Mario games. These games are side scrolling games, a side scrolling game is a game with a horizontal camera that follows the player as they go through the level. Mario always has the goal to reach the end of the level, which is normally a flagpole you jump on to finish each level. In these games the player can only move left and right. No forward or backwards movement is allowed. The players can also make Mario jump. Jumping is one of his most important moves because it can help you get over obstacles or defeat enemies.
The other main gameplay feature in the 2D games is the powerups Mario can acquire. These powerups give Mario a variety of different powers and abilities to help you either beat the level, or find secrets hidden without. There are many different power ups across the Mario games, and there are a lot that are staples to the series. The fire flower is one of the most used powerups in Mario games. The fire flower changes the color of Mario's clothes from red to white and gives him the ability to shoot fireballs. Those fireballs can help you defeat enemies from a distance, so you do not have to jump on their head. But Mario's most popular powerup is for sure the mushroom. The mushroom makes Mario larger and allows you to get hit by an enemy one more time before you fail the level. That powerup makes appearances in basically every single Mario game no matter which style. Some of the 2D games also feature multiplayer where you and 3 friends can play through the levels together.
